I challenge you to a dual! Just kidding!
A couple of weeks ago Mom asked me what I wanted to do to celebrate my birthday. The last three family birthdays have been spent at Musashi's, Dave & Busters, and The Melting Pot. All three of these places offered some kind of unique dining experience for all of us, so I wasn't sure how to top any of that! I thought for a moment then decided: I want my family to complete a 5K with me!! You can walk, run, or jog, but the main point would be that we do it as a family!
Now that I have thrown out this crazy idea out to you, let me explain. A year ago in May I completed my first 5K. It just so happens it was the Jim Thorpe Courage Run, the very same 5K I am asking you to do with me this year. My friend Cheryl and I had been walking some in preparation for the Weight Watchers Walk It Challenge. It was at the end of May and we were very nervous! TJ wanted thought it would be fun to try the Courage Run together at the start of May just to see what it was like. So I did it. And I walked most of it. For someone as out of shape as I was, and hadn't really exercised in years, simply walking 3.1 miles was extremely difficult. Either way I finished and realized I could do it!
That was just the start of what would become my new hobby. I love the feeling of accomplishment when I cross the finish line. I love that I feel like with every race I complete, I improve on the person I am and who I will be one day. The only person I run against is myself. I want to improve my times with each race. Now I am on a mission to find all of the really fun 5K's in Oklahoma. I have signed up for the Dirty 30, a 5K with 15 obstacles and mud included! I have signed up for the Color Run, at every kilometer they throw a different color of paint on you!
I am not asking you to pick up running/jogging as a hobby, just to come experience something I really enjoy and make a different and new kind of family memory with me!
Just in case you need more convincing I have prepared the following:
Excuse #1- "I don't think we can make it to the City on time. The race starts at 8am and we live in Walters/Lawton."
Rebuttal #1- We have a wonderful spare bedroom with a queen size bed. Also, I am sure Kaytie would love some company as well!
Excuse #2- "I'm out of shape."
Rebuttal #2- Um, yeah so was I and I finished it. Plus, if my Dad has been walking 3 times a week to get ready you can too.
Excuse #3- "I have to work."
Rebuttal #3- Okay, I can't argue this one. Bring me a signed note from your boss!
Reasons to do this:
#1- It's for my birthday and I'm the boss! Right?
#2- The money for the entry fee goes to a good cause!
#3- It will be a unique family experience and a fun memory!
#4- You can say you did a 5K.
#5- You get a t-shirt!
#6-We are going to go eat breakfast afterwards!
#7- You will be 3.1 miles closer to a healthier you!
#8- Have I mentioned it will be fun?
#9- This is the easiest 5K you will ever do! There is no elevation change along the course! It is flat the whole way! Trust me hills suck!
#10- Why not do it?
So now that I have done a great job of convincing you to help me celebrate my birthday by completing a 5K, here is the link to sign up http://integrisok.com/jim-thorpe-rehabilitation-oklahoma-city/2012courage-run.
Let me know if you all have any questions!
